In Conversation and Lunch with Moira Rudolph – Jane Austen
Jane Austen’s Bath vs. Fanny Burney’s City of Palaces
Join Dr Moira Rudolf, independent Bath Walking Tour Guide, in this new and lively talk in which she will attempt – with the help of Fanny Burney – to further disentangle the myths and legends surrounding Jane Austen’s true attitude to this wonderful city.
Fanny Burney was 23 years older than Jane Austen and outlived her by 23 years. It is a little-known fact that her early novels were read and enjoyed by Jane, whose own title Pride and Prejudice derives from the final pages of Fanny’s second (1782) novel Cecilia. Jane also refers to Fanny in the pages of Northanger Abbey, albeit via ignorance personified, the odious John Thorpe.
Moira’s talk will feature many lesser-known quotes from both Jane Austen and Fanny Burney, and will focus on several well known architectural highlights of the city. She will arrive in costume in plenty of time to welcome guests over coffee, and welcome questions then and after her talk.
The event includes:
- Tea, coffee and homemade biscuits on arrival at 12.00 noon
- Talk from Dr Moira Rudolf
- A three-course lunch
- Followed by coffee and petits fours
