For 27 years the Trencherman’s Guide has been the passport to exquisite dining at independent restaurants across the South West of England. The new edition features 150 carefully selected restaurants which exceed the guide’s high quality criteria.

The 27th edition of the guide include 32 new additions such as Mitch Tonks’ The Spiny Lobster in Bristol, The Farmers Arms in Woolsery, Devon and The Lord Poulett Arms at Hinton St George in Somerset which join the likes of Michael Caines’ Michelin starred Lympstone Manor and Restaurant Nathan Outlaw.

150 restaurants from Dorset, Wiltshire, Bristol, Bath, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are included and range from beautiful rural dining pubs to smart city restaurants. In order to be included, all exceed the Guide’s strict quality criteria. Other notable inclusions this year include vegan temple to gastronomy, Acorn Restaurant in Bath and new Michelin star, The Olive Tree Restaurant (also Bath).

The guide’s editor, Jo Rees of Salt, says: ‘The South West has some truly fabulous dining experiences –  if you know where to look. We like to think of the Trencherman’s Guide as the insider’s guide to some real gems – many of them off the beaten track.’

Trencherman’s chairman, Michelin starred chef Michael Caines calls the guide ‘a guarantee of exceptional dining experiences’, while Rick Stein describes the book as ’a guide with teeth’.

In addition to the restaurant write-ups, the 27th edition also includes leading member chefs’ tip-offs on where they’ll be eating out in 2019/20, ‘Take 5’ bitesized roundups of some of the best dining experiences, plus full-page features on each of the 2019 Trencherman’s Award winning restaurants.

Foreword

Since its inception 27 years ago, the Trencherman's Guide has held an unparalleled position in showcasing the most exceptional restaurants in the South West.
As you can see in this edition, the dining scene in the South West is world-class, so it's been our pleasure to create a guide that showcases the very best experiences at the very best establishments.
I hope you revel in exquisite and memorable moments at the places you encounter this year.
You'll also find special events and offers from the restaurants in our fortnightly email from Trencherman's HQ.
Here's to another year exploring the South West in pursuit of incredible edible adventures.

Welcome

It’s astonishing how the South West continues to evolve and shine as one of the UK’s leading gastronomic regions.
The stunning seafood spoils plucked from the shimmering coastline, our long tradition of farming and careful animal husbandry, and our wealth of creative producers feeds a culture that’s vibrant with food festivals, dining events, vineyards, world-class restaurants and food-focused hotels.
Recent innovations in the dining scene – which can be seen throughout this 27th edition – include the introduction of more plant-based eating experiences, a burgeoning proliferation of kitchen gardens and an explosion in craft distilling (and the innovative drinks experiences that result from it).
In an ever-changing environment, we restaurateurs and chefs continuously respond to customers’ expectations – aiming, of course, to exceed them.
As a group of independent establishments, sourcing from many other small, independent and family-run businesses, we fly the flag for quality, authenticity and provenance, and strive to protect the natural landscape, push the boundaries of creativity and create experiences that are truly beautiful.
I hope you enjoy the guide.
