Michelin-starred dining on the edge of Exmoor
The Masons Arms is a beautiful thatched 13th‑century country pub that serves cosy pints by the fire while also being home to a tour de force of fine dining.
For 17 years, Mark and Sarah Dodson have run their Michelin‑starred restaurant (they were awarded the star within six months of opening and have held it ever since) and created a destination that attracts diners from across the country. In 2022, Mark was also honoured with a Trencherman’s Award for Special Contribution.
Nestled in rolling hills between Tiverton and north Devon, the dining room offers views of the bucolic countryside from which many of the ingredients are sourced. Local produce is key for the couple and they’ve long supported regional farmers and growers, as well as developing the skills of college students looking to enter the industry.
Previously, Mark was head chef at The Waterside Inn at Bray in Berkshire so, as you’d imagine, the cooking is on point: elegant, beautifully executed and authentic to this countryside setting. Happily, The Masons Arms isn’t somewhere to be reserved for special occasions as dishes are pleasingly priced.
Trencherman’s tip: arrive in plenty of time to take a seat by the fire in the ancient bar and sip a G&T before heading into the restaurant for dinner.
