Deli and dining delights at Blue Plate near Looe

Journey to the south Cornish coast and make a beeline for the seaside village of Downderry near Looe to discover the pleasures of this quirky bistro-bar-meets-deli.

Any visit to this special little find should begin with a perusal of Blue Plate‘s groaning shelves of local produce. Cheeses, jams and chutneys are accompanied by wines and freshly baked sourdough and other carby treats from the inhouse bakery, so you may find yourself picking up tomorrow’s lunch before you even sit down to today’s.

The outside patio is a good place for an aperitif and if gin is your thing you’ll find a substantial list to work your way through (many distilled in Cornwall). The team are adept at mixing a decent cocktail and you’ll find a pleasing selection.

Many find they don’t get any further than the terrace or the tall tables in the deli bar and join the host of patrons spending their evening chatting over a glass of wine while scooping molten brie with crusty bread. However, if a more substantial supper is what you’ve got in mind, book a table in the comfortable dining room and feast on fresh fish and local seafood. Dishes such as crab bisque and lobster with wild garlic feature alongside stonking gourmet burgers and sourdough pizza, so you’ll find something to please everyone in your party.

In keeping with Blue Plate’s commitment to sourcing as many ingredients as possible within Cornwall, the perfect way to finish your visit is with a speciality coffee roasted in Bude by Sabin’s roastery. You can buy this to-go, along with so many of the other ingredients used in your meal.

Trencherman’s tip: take the Blue Plate experience further by staying the night in one of the two guest apartments, and follow lunch with a snoop around owner Sam’s gift shop next door.
