The Alverton Hotel

Historic luxury in the Cornish capital

The Alverton is a hidden treasure in the city of Truro, tucked away at the top of a winding drive and surrounded by mature gardens. It feels a world away from the bustle of the city, when in fact it’s only a ten-minute stroll from its centre.

The Grade II*-listed hotel’s riches are revealed at every turn: on discovery of its history as a private residence turned convent; when unwinding on the sunny terrace with an exquisite cocktail in hand; and on waking in one of the luxuriously refurbished bedrooms and suites.

However, the true jewel is to be found in the elegant cooking that comes courtesy of a skilled team led by Ollie Wyatt and overseen by executive chef Nick Hodges. The seasonally focused menu features the best of land and sea, with Ollie’s pick of the Cornish dayboats’ catch (such as whole Cornish sole with grape vermouth velouté and samphire) rubbing shoulders with duck leg scrumpet served with fennel, pistachio, orange and white-miso mayonnaise.

Locally foraged accompaniments elevate seasonal flavours to centre stage in the likes of the spring flowerpot of sugared filo, chocolate soil, elderflower curd and berries.

Trencherman’s tip: The Alverton hosts a number of events throughout the year, including live music Summer Sessions on the terrace and Taste of Truro suppers.
