The Idle Rocks, St Mawes, Cornwall

Idyllic waterfront retreat

Whether you’re sipping a cocktail on the harbour-view terrace, relishing the sunset over the water from your sea-view bedroom or watching a film in the 25-seater Hidden Cinema, The Idle Rocks is a great place to unwind.

The Relais & Châteaux hotel’s waterfront location and exemplary hospitality are reason enough to visit, but in-the-know foodies flock for the inventive food offering from head chef Matt Haggath and team.

They’ve designed a menu that promises a culinary journey around Cornwall. It majors on seasonal flavours, with fresh ingredients sourced through carefully developed relationships with local suppliers, farmers and MSC‑certified fishermen.

Signature dishes include St Mawes mackerel (caught within shouting distance) with romesco, hispi cabbage and sesame dressing, and roasted monkfish with girolles, black garlic, seaweed and cider sauce. Desserts are elegant yet unfussy – think strawberry and basil crémeux with yogurt, pistachio, matcha
and clotted cream.

Trencherman’s tip: For a gourmet getaway, book a room for the night. The decor takes inspiration from the stunning harbour views and oozes contemporary coastal style. It’s a brilliant base from which to explore the tranquil Roseland Peninsula or take the ferry over to lively Falmouth. Or simply stay put – request a Grand Seaview Room with window‑side tub in which to soak while watching sailing boats
glide through the bay.
