Traditional charm at The Old Mill Bistro near Wadebridge

When you want to combine the luxurious treat of fine dining with all the low-key appeal of a cosy bistro, this 16th-century corn mill fits the bill.

Arrive early to enjoy a sundowner next to the creek before heading inside for classic dishes crafted around top-quality local produce such as wood pigeon, steak and duck. As befits this Cornish setting, The Old Mill’s menu is also awash with seafood and the well-executed surf and turf combos are not to be missed.

Head chef Adam Tomlinson and team source from an array of Cornish fishermen and farmers, so the menu changes daily depending on what’s recently landed or harvested. The team at the family-run bistro take great pride in turning these high-quality ingredients into homemade treats, and everything – from delicious crusty bread to sticky toffee pudding and petits fours – is crafted with a perfectionist’s eye for flavour and detail.

Those desiring an alfresco finale to their evening can opt for a coffee or digestif by the waterwheel (the terrace is heated and blankets are provided on cooler nights).

For those yielding to the enticements of the gin menu there’s the option of ditching the drive home and instead staying over in one of the country-cottage bedrooms of the B&B.
