Epicurean escape in Bradford-on-Avon
All the ingredients for the perfect country escape – Chesterfield sofas, log fires, excellent ales, two AA rosette dining and Georgian-style bedrooms – come as standard at this country pub.
Chef patron Alexander Venables and partner Alison Ward-Baptiste opened The George in 2015 with the aim of creating the kind of dining pub they’d like to visit: one with excellent classic British cuisine, comfortable rooms and a warm welcome. The result is a child- and dog-friendly inn which offers a top-notch dining experience.
Alexander draws on his extensive culinary background (including the role of head chef at nearby Michelin-starred Lucknam Park) to create a menu featuring exuberant, hearty and delicious dishes. The food is fashioned around genuine British classics such as pig cheek, runny yolk scotch eggs, and pork belly with faggots.
Dishes such as beef wellington and venison loin with mini game-pie showcase top quality local and seasonal produce. Traditional butcher’s cuts are sourced from a mile away, while some veg is grown in allotments behind the pub.
For morning coffee and pre-dinner aperitifs head to the sunny garden, or take refuge from the elements in the cosy bar.
The George is set over three floors with four dining areas so there are plenty of places to dine – plus two lovely private rooms for celebrations.
