Small and special
Its Best Restaurant win at the 2021 Virtual Trencherman’s Awards has confirmed Number Eight’s reputation as one of the region’s most exciting up-and-coming dining spots.
After many years working in restaurants in Cornwall, Joshua Jones and Chloe Wilks took the plunge and decided to launch their own modern British offering in the north Devon town of Bideford. Going it alone was bold, but it paid off and Joshua’s smart cooking has developed a fanbase of foodies who travel from all over the region to dine at the attractive little restaurant.
Number Eight’s unassuming location on a small Bideford backstreet may fool the casual passerby, but those in the know understand it’s well worth hunting out for an intimate dinner for two or a smart supper with friends.
Joshua works alone in the kitchen, carefully sourcing top-notch produce for dishes such as cured local scallops with blood orange, while Chloe is the friendly face out front who looks after diners with calm efficiency and warmth. The setting is pleasingly pared back, letting the food do the talking.
Trencherman’s tip: booking is essential at this bijou gem as the limited number of tables make it difficult to bag a seat as a walk-in.
