Chez Dominique

15 Argyle Street, Bath, BA2 4BQ

Parisian charm overlooking the River Avon

Family-owned restaurant Chez Dominique has established itself as a firm favourite in well-heeled Bath. It occupies a prime spot close to Pulteney Bridge, one of the most photographed examples of Georgian architecture in the city, and has a private dining room overlooking the weir.

Husband-and-wife owners Chris Tabbitt and Sarah Olivier opened the doors in 2016, and named it after their first child, Dominic. Today, it radiates French bistro charm, reflecting Chris’ training in classic French and British cuisines at quality establishments including Bibendum in London’s Michelin House.

Chez Dominique head chef Sam Lewis uses the freshest South West ingredients to create a seasonal menu bursting with classic flavours and techniques. His contemporary European cooking is matched by the modern decor.

It doesn’t get much more continental than onglet steak, a cut beloved by French chefs but largely overlooked this side of La Manche. At Chez Dominique it’s served with mustard and tarragon butter and pommes frites. Keep it français for dessert with a crémeux au chocolat with hazelnut, dulce de leche and a lemon and ginger tuille.

The wine list features robust French classics alongside stunning New World varieties. Add warm, friendly and attentive service and you’ll be so relaxed that you’ll leave expecting to step into gay Paris rather than Jane Austen’s Bath.

Trencherman’s tip: Book a table at lunchtime to take advantage of the set-price menu. Four-legged friends are welcome too.
