The Fig Tree @ 36

36 Admiralty Street, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 3RU

Plymouth’s little slice of Paris

The Fig Tree picked up the Best Restaurant gong at the Food Drink Devon Awards 2022, testament to the neighbourhood bistro’s sterling reputation with locals and visitors alike.

Its Trust the Chef menu (which offers three courses for £29 at lunch and £39 at dinner) has proved so popular that owners Ryan and Tanya Marsland have extended its availability to every day the restaurant is open.

Head chef Ryan’s dishes are a celebration of Devon’s fruitful land and sea, with hero ingredients like just-landed River Exe mussels, Plymouth monkfish and Copplestone chicken sourced from the region’s top producers.

The line-up changes daily, but guests will discover a French leaning in dishes such as fish stew of gurnard, skate, mussels, fennel and samphire, served with aioli and warm bread.

If the forecast is favourable, book one of the tables under the fig tree in the garden and kick off an alfresco supper with cocktails, plump olives and homemade bread. The restaurant is tucked away on a residential street a short walk from Royal William Yard – perfect for a post‑lunch stroll along the harbour.

Trencherman’s tip: Visit in the daytime to pick up takeaway treats at the deli. Highlights include the hot pork‑belly sandwich and Fowey mussels with warm bread and aioli.
