Rolling hills and rural charm

Straddling the border between Devon and Cornwall, this secluded country house hotel enjoys sweeping views across the Tamar Valley and is surrounded by five acres of verdant gardens to explore.

Under new ownership since May 2022 and with fresh talent in the kitchen, plans are underway to refresh the hotel while still retaining the rural charm and exceptional dining it’s renowned for.

The team of chefs craft seasonally focused menus that capitalise on the South West’s bounty of produce from land and sea. Paignton crab, Brixham john dory and Dartmoor venison are just a few of the ingredients that take starring roles on the line-up.

Work is also in progress to reintroduce the hotel’s kitchen garden, which will provide a steady supply of seasonal fruit, veg and herbs.

The restaurant takes bookings for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, but for the full country-house experience book one of the elegant guestrooms and wake up to the sound of birdsong and a hearty home-cooked breakfast.

Trencherman’s tip: The Horn of Plenty is a five-minute drive from the pretty market town of Tavistock. Head to its Pannier Market to stock up on artisan produce and browse locally made arts and crafts.
