Whisky galore in the countryside

This charming 17th-century inn in the Devon village of Doddiscombsleigh has long enjoyed a solid reputation for excellent wining and dining.

Off the beaten track in countryside not far from Exeter, it’s so tucked away you’d never just stumble across it. But those in the know visit for the lovely cooking and incredible drinks collection: 240 whiskies and 30 wines by the glass, plus an impressive cellar of bottles from across the globe.

It’s a dining spot for all seasons, and in summer foodies make a beeline for the garden. However, The NoBody Inn is undoubtedly at its most atmospheric in the depths of winter when low ceilings, blackened beams and period features combine with the crackle of smouldering logs in the grate and the soft glow of candlelight.

Even if wine and whisky aren’t your bag, you’ll undoubtedly find a spirit to seduce you – the orange notes of the house gin are a good place to start – as well as a sterling collection of ales and beers.

The pleasures extend way beyond those of the liquid variety: the crowd‑pleasing cooking (crafted from a wealth of locally produced ingredients) deftly walks the line between smart and hearty. Ingredients such as local venison and fish from the Devon coast are treated with cheerful reverence.

Trencherman’s tip: attractive guestrooms make The NoBody Inn a great spot for a gourmet getaway, solving the ‘who’ll be designated driver?‛ argument.
