Ornate fireplaces, grand old clocks and paintings, polished brass and copper, and a well-stocked bar are precisely what you’d hope to discover after a day tramping over the tussocky hills. Within this characterful setting, talented executive chef Mike Palmer has built a fanbase of foodies who visit the restaurant to delight in globally inspired dishes. Throughout his menus, there’s a firm emphasis on utilising the very best seasonal ingredients from local farmers, fishermen and producers. Curations such as monkfish pakora with mint yogurt, onion bhaji and king prawn masala rub shoulders with Dartmoor lamb with gentleman’s relish, potato dauphinoise and pancetta. Puddings provide a satiating end to a meal with lighter options such as mango iced parfait with a passionfruit, pineapple, lime and coconut sorbet, to heartier classics such as sticky toffee pudding or a platter of West Country cheeses.

Fine wines complement the cooking, and the hotel often hosts wine-pairing dinners. Ale aficionados can also enjoy a pint courtesy of Princetown’s Dartmoor Brewery – we’d recommend sampling its award winning signature sip, Jail Ale. The Two Bridges Hotel Devon cream tea is also extremely noteworthy and best devoured in the gardens after an exhilarating Dartmoor stomp.
