Refined comfort food

When Alasdair Clifford returned to his home county of Somerset in 2018, he brought with him a host of skills honed in top restaurants such as Chez Bruce in London. They’ve been put to good use in the friendly environment of this contemporary country pub, which he runs in partnership with his wife Victoria Collins.

On taking over the Boar, the duo refreshed the pub’s interior and menu to create a stylish setting in which to serve ‘refined comfort food’ – a modest description for something that’s nudged its way into the Estrella Damm Top 100 Gastropubs.

These gratifying dishes offer a taste of the local terroir – an example being charcoal-grilled fillet of 40-day aged Devon Red Ruby beef from Meadow Lea Farm (near South Petherton) served with hand-cut chips, smoked ox cheek and mushroom croquette, black garlic and parsley salad.

As well as working closely with local farmers, foragers and cheesemongers, the couple also collaborate with regional breweries and host an ever‑evolving collection of ales, ciders and spirits.

Exciting times are afoot this year with the acquisition of a large site next door. Subject to planning, the couple intend to build a bakery, further accommodation and a market garden (including native Somerset fruit trees) to supply the kitchen.
