Farm workers on the Somerset Levels have lubricated their thirsty throats at this Godney pub for centuries, and when Tamsin and Ben Costigan took over The Sheppey Inn in 2020 they were determined to maintain its position at the heart of the community. A renovation with eclectic materials and furnishings, paired with superior food, have seen the duo realise their dream.
The Sheppey Inn is a dark horse. Its exterior gives no hint of the wonders within: part cider house, part boutique hotel. Low-beamed ceilings in the bar contrast with high white walls in the barn. There are cosy booths, regular art exhibitions championing local talent, 1950s retro furniture and guitars waiting to be played. Music matters here – evidenced in the background mix of jazz, funk and blues playing while you dine, and the live bands that grace the stage.
In the kitchen, head chef Tom Ollis whips up modern European food with a Somerset twist. Try local beef with yorkshire pudding and red wine gravy, followed by an ever-evolving line-up of inventive desserts served with a side of homemade ice cream.
Accompanying the food are fine wines, a changing roster of beers and ales (APA Sunshine Reggae from Somerton is a local favourite), and a bar stocked with knock-your-socks-off cask ciders.
A long-decked terrace hanging above the river provides the perfect perch for summer lounging. Look out for voles, kingfishers and even otters amid the idyllic countryside setting.
