On balmy summer evenings in Bristol, few restaurants can compete with Harbour House’s waterside location for post-work drinks against a backdrop of paddleboarders and kayakers.
The building that Harbour House calls home (and which was formerly Severnshed) is said to have been designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and used as his private boathouse.
In its latest incarnation, it’s a pleasingly rustic restaurant with vaulted ceilings and verdant tropical plants which create a relaxed and airy vibe. This informality extends to the food offering, which majors on all-day dining.
Freshly caught seafood is the star of chef Altin Ndoja’s line-up, executed simply but exquisitely in dishes like seafood linguine, fish cakes, smoked mackerel salad, and fish and chips.
Meat eaters needn’t feel left out, however, as there’s also a stellar selection of piscine-free options including grilled Gloucestershire lamb cutlets with apricot harissa couscous, baba ganoush and gremolata. Vegetarians are catered for with the likes of orzo accompanied by roasted onion puree, charred courgette, and king oyster and porcini mushrooms.
