Eco sanctuary on the coast

It’s all about balance at Hotel Scarlet, Newquay, Mawgan Porth: not the ripped-abs type demonstrated by the surfers carving through the waves beyond the balconies but in the delicate harmony and tension between ethical sustainability and utter indulgence.

Scarlet was groundbreaking when it launched as an adults-only boutique eco-hotel in 2009. It continues to lead the field, providing a sophisticated yet sustainable experience where you can luxuriate in low-impact lazing and feasting. Guests enjoy captivating Atlantic views from every room – even some of the bathrooms.

Head chef Jack Clayton’s passion for seafood and sustainability marries perfectly with the environmental reputation of the hotel. Having previously achieved three AA rosettes and two Bib Gourmands during his career in the East Midlands, his philosophy centres on showcasing the journey of individual ingredients, which are largely seasonal, foraged and local. Highlights of Jack’s new Cornish menu include sea-trout pastrami with horseradish, cucumber, mustard seeds and soda bread, and whole john dory with leek, parsley, lemon butter sauce and herring eggs.

Trencherman’s tip

Bliss out with a bespoke treatment at the clifftop spa. It boasts equal eco creds to the rest of the hotel thanks to its bromine-filtered indoor pool, outdoor natural reed pool and cedar-wood barrel sauna.
