The Fig Tree @ 36 in Plymouth has amassed a slew of gold medals recently, testament to the neighbourhood bistro’s sterling reputation with locals and visitors alike.
Trust the Chef menu – which offers three courses for £29 at lunch and £39 at dinner – has proved so popular that The Fig Tree @ 36 owners Ryan and Tanya Marsland have extended its availability to every day the restaurant is open, and Wednesdays and Thursdays exclusively feature this menu.
Head chef Ryan’s dishes are a celebration of Devon’s fruitful land and sea, including hero dishes like Cheeky Pig: slow-cooked Cornish pork belly, braised cheek, chorizo and black pudding croquette with apple puree, smoked butter hispi and pork gravy.
The line-up changes daily but guests will discover a leaning toward French cooking in the likes of fish stew, which typically comprises monkfish, cod, ling, scallops, mussels and clams, and dishes such as crab bouillabaisse with cavolo nero, aioli and warm bread.
A takeaway menu caters for those in need of a grab-and-go lunch and is excellent value at £10 for a foccacia sandwich and hot drink. The newly opened onsite deli also gives guests the chance to pick up the Fig Tree team’s smoked butter (dairy and non dairy), olives and focaccia loaf.
If the forecast is favourable, book one of the tables under the fig tree in the garden and kick off an alfresco supper with cocktails, plump olives and homemade bread. The restaurant is tucked away on a residential street a short walk from Royal William Yard – perfect for a post-lunch stroll along the harbour.
Trencherman’s tip
Visit in the daytime to pick up takeaway treats at the deli. Highlights include the hot pork-belly sandwich and Fowey mussels with warm bread and aioli.
