Part of Charles and Edmund Inkin’s Eatdrinksleep stable (sister venues include chef fave The Gurnard’s Head near Zennor and The Felin Fach Griffin in Wales), The Old Coastguard is a restaurant with rooms in the beautiful fishing village of Mousehole.
Its menu is dictated by what’s local and in season. Newlyn’s dayboats tie up a mere two miles west so fish is a given, but head chef Danny Garland also pays homage to the superb meats, cheeses and vegetables produced nearby. His culinary background – he previously cooked with Yotam Ottolenghi – also inspires creative plant-based and vegetarian compilations.
Choose from three charming places to dine: the scrubbed wooden tables of the Upper Deck with their views to St Clement’s Isle; on the Sun Deck where just a pane of glass separates diners from the palm trees; or, best of all, on the terrace overlooking the ocean.
The menu may be rooted in traditional brasserie-style cooking, but when ingredients this good are treated with care dishes are elevated above the norm. Monkfish, for example, is served with whipped cod’s roe, kimchi butter, mussels and grilled courgettes.
With many of the cosy bedrooms featuring views across Mount’s Bay and out to sea, staying the night is seriously tempting.
Trencherman’s tip
During the summer, make a beeline for The Crab Shack in The Old Coastguard garden where seafood and lighter snacks are served all day alongside drinks such as craft beer and locally roasted speciality coffee from Yallah.
