The Old Bell Hotel

Eight centuries of hospitality

Abbey Row, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, SN16 0BW

Chef(s) Multiple

Standing in the shadow of Malmesbury Abbey, The Old Bell Hotel lays claim to more than 800 years of history and is widely regarded as England’s oldest hotel. Yet, despite its age, it feels far from frozen in time.

Owners Kim and Whit Hanks have carefully preserved the building’s character while ensuring it remains a lively part of the town’s social fabric. Original features, historic architecture and centuries of stories provide the backdrop to a contemporary hospitality offering centred around Abbey Row restaurant.

The menu moves comfortably between well-executed classics and ambitious seasonal dishes. Provenance remains a guiding principle, with ingredients sourced from local producers, including nearby Abbey House Manor Gardens, alongside fresh seafood from Brixham. Sunday roasts and fish and chips remain favourites, while the wider menu reflects the kitchen’s commitment to seasonal British cooking.

Throughout the hotel, thoughtful modern touches come together with centuries-old surroundings. It’s a place that feels equally suited to a leisurely lunch, weekend escape or overnight stay exploring the southern Cotswolds.

The hotel is a great base for exploring Malmesbury, Tetbury and Cirencester
