Boho bolthole by the beach

Its spectacular setting makes The Godolphin an ideal base for gourmets who want to explore the tidal island (which lies just half a mile off the coast) before retreating to the comfort of the hotel for dinner at its Shutters restaurant.

The dining room’s floor-to-ceiling windows provide a mesmerising vista of the mystical castle and the tide lapping the shore. Watching white-tipped waves while perusing a menu awash with fish and shellfish should rouse the appetite for seafood, and satiation can be found in dishes like South Coast sea trout with braised baby gem, Fowey mussels and crab, and samphire.

Menus are created around local ingredients including seafood caught by Cornish dayboats and meat and veg from nearby farms. This quality produce is crafted into classic dishes that emphasise the natural flavours of land and sea.

The decor is as slick as the cooking, with a bohemian-chic vibe and subtle nods to all things nautical. Funky finishing touches include rattan peacock chairs, Berber-style rugs and jazzy lampshades.
