Seafood with style in Topsham

Fresh-from-the-ocean seafood is the calling card of this buzzy award-winning restaurant, just a stone’s throw from the River Exe.

Located in a charmingly crooked 18th-century townhouse, The Galley has an intimate bistro vibe that makes it an ideal date-night venue. Reserve a table for two and indulge in a couple or three courses from the fish-forward menu paired with something special from the extensive wine list.

New head chef Jack Harvey honed his craft working in London at various establishments run by Marcus Wareing. Specialising in bold, clean flavours, he regularly updates the line-up depending on the day’s catch. Expect to find the likes of crab tartlet with brown and white crab, avocado, fennel, grapefruit and coriander to start, followed by mains such as roasted monkfish tail with tomato, black olive, mussels and romesco sauce. The carefully curated menu always includes quality meat and vegetarian options too.

This year has seen The Galley adorned with an array of accolades. A Michelin plate was swiftly followed by a Bib Gourmand, and the restaurant has gained entry into Hardens.

Trencherman’s tip: Leave room for a rather epic cheeseboard, featuring South West favourites like Ticklemore (crafted with Devon goat’s milk) and brie made by the dairy pros at Sharpham in South Devon.
