This 300-year-old thatched pub, in the village of Burton Bradstock on the Jurassic Coast, delivers quality cooking and a refreshingly unpretentious vibe.
Husband-and-wife team Jaap and Hannah Schep met while working for the Marriott group and now delight diners with their own take on hospitality.
A good proportion of the menu majors on local fish, and Dutch-born chef Jaap is especially fond of pan-Asian flavour profiles. Indonesian seafood curry of monkfish cheek, tiger prawns, and mussels, served with basmati rice and soy-steamed greens, sits comfortably alongside more British-leaning pub dishes like the Chesil Smokery seafood ploughman’s.
Visitors should also check out the pub’s alluring selection of bar snacks which, in quantity, could kick plans for a starter, main and pud into touch. Who wouldn’t enjoy working their way through small plates of cockle popcorn, Portland Pearl oysters and bluefin tuna tostada with avocado, lime, soy, chilli, cucumber, sesame and coriander?
There’s a substantial list of by-the-bottle and by-the-glass wines, and the menu includes many English sparkling wines and intriguing international finds.
Trencherman’s tip
Full table service is available in the garden, so outdoor diners receive the same excellent experience as those dining indoors. Go alfresco on a sunny Sunday for a roast lunch showcasing slow-cooked local meats.
