Nostalgia-packed dining

In 1993, chef Kevin Viner made history when he earned Cornwall its first Michelin star at Pennypots in Blackwater, an accolade he retained at the restaurant for eight years. Three decades on, he has returned to his roots and relaunched Pennypots within The Falmouth Arms, his rural Ladock inn.

Since taking over The Falmouth Arms in 2019, husband-and-wife team Kevin and Jill have restored the former coaching inn, enhancing the character of its crooked walls and beamed ceilings with their own unique touches. It’s where Kevin delights diners with seasonal menus that condense his immense repertoire into a handful of beautifully crafted, classic dishes.

In this new chapter for the inn, Kevin is revisiting the refined French dishes that helped him gain – and retain – Michelin success.

Wednesday to Saturday, guests can indulge in nostalgic compilations such as twice-baked West Country cheese soufflé, loin of Cornish venison with spiced pears, armagnac prunes and bitter chocolate jus, and chocolate temptation with garott cherries and hazelnut sorbet. On Sundays, however, The Falmouth Arms resumes its pub guise and serves a cracking Sunday lunch.

Trencherman’s tip: Make the most of the experience by booking one of the cosy guestrooms and indulging in the excellent wine pairings.
