Stay the night

Dartmoor pubs tend to focus on traditional fodder, but this gem in the market town of Moretonhampstead offers a more unusual dining experience.

Head to the authentic family-run inn for Mediterranean-inspired cooking in a classic pub setting. Chef-owner Nigel Hoyle dishes up a menu majoring on thin-crust, romana-style pizza – but these are a far cry from the usual takeaway variety.

Twice-risen focaccia dough is rolled thinly and piled with locally sourced and Italian-imported artisan ingredients. Crowd-pleasing combos include the ‘Vesuvio’ (‘nduja sausage, chorizo, fresh onions, confit potatoes, buffalo mozzarella and oregano) and ‘The Eastern’ (spiced lamb, peppers, cumin-roasted onions, harissa and tahini).

Beyond the pizza oven, try dishes such as the Pasta Pollo Pugliese of tarragon chicken meatballs in rich tomato ragout with creamed orecchiette, or white bean and fennel cassoulet with butter-roasted hake, tiger prawns and smoked tomato aioli.

Puds are equally casual but captivating – think homemade rhubarb crumble with custard pannacotta.

The Horse is a great spot to visit with a crowd as its range of antipasti and pizza is made for sharing. And what can’t be finished can be taken home in a takeaway container.
