Jurassic Coast treasure

Sitting on cliffs overlooking Dorset’s sweeping Chesil Beach and Lyme Bay, The Seaside Boarding House is a true treasure on the Jurassic Coast.

Inspired by classic British Edwardian hotels and the Cape Cod paintings of Edward Hopper, this antidote to city life was the brainchild of the creators of London’s internationally renowned Groucho Club and exudes the quality you’d expect from such provenance.

It’s evidenced no more so than in the restaurant. Whether you’re visiting for a simple breakfast, long lunch, intimate dinner for two, or six-course banquet with all the bells and whistles, the menus celebrate modern British cuisine while championing seasonal produce from Dorset’s farms, smallholdings and fishing boats. It doesn’t get much more local than Portland crab, paired here with green gazpacho soup and walnut oil.

When the sun’s shining, the restaurant’s large patio doors are flung open, although on balmy days you might prefer a seat on the terrace overlooking Chesil Beach. It’s a popular spot for a signature cocktail, glass of fizz or nightcap under the stars.

Extend your visit with a stay in one of the smart sea-view rooms. Art lovers will be in seventh heaven amid nautical paintings and a collection of Peter Blake prints on loan from a London gallery.

Trencherman’s tip: Don’t miss cocktail hour – between 5pm and 6pm every day – when selected cocktails and Prosecco are just £5.
