A connection to the land and local people is the driving force behind Holm in South Petherton, Somerset, which won Best Restaurant in the Trencherman’s Awards 2024

The nearby fields supply many of the ingredients in the evolving menus created by chef-owner Nicholas Balfe (who you may recognise from his recent stint on the BBC’s Great British Menu). Having run successful London restaurants Salon, Levan and Larry’s, the talented chef moved to Somerset and now partners with farmers, growers, butchers, gamekeepers and fishermen who share his respect for top-quality ingredients.
The open-plan dining room is punctuated by mid-century modern furniture and artwork, providing a casual setting for the smart and creative food.

The modern classic eaterie, housed in a Victorian bank, has seven beautiful ensuite rooms upstairs to secure its destination restaurant status. Nicholas and team wanted to create a hotel experience that mirrored not only the earthy, rustic aesthetic of the restaurant but also the ethos – just like the food, all of the furnishings and art are sourced from the local area, with a story to tell.
Furniture, artwork and furnishings designed and made as close as a few villages away sit against interiors-mag-ready exposed lime plaster walls in rooms that are all named after British trees. Breakfast is a home-grown, homemade affair with Chalkstream trout (smoked in-house over local applewood), house cured bacon collar and hash browns, or locally foraged mushrooms sautéed with truffle butter on house made sourdough – plus indulgent cinnamon butter brioche buns to take away.
The winner of our competition and their plus one will be able to experience all that Holm has to offer with a chef’s tasting menu dinner followed by a night’s stay in one of the beautifully appointed rooms above the restaurant, plus breakfast in the morning.
