Stay the night

This 16th-century former coaching inn has sated guests for over 500 years with fine food, drink and hospitality. Since 2011, Mark and Rosie Starling have been at the helm, treating diners to a quality experience that’s earned them two AA rosettes, a Michelin Plate, and a spot in the Good Food Guide.

Lying in bucolic countryside bordering Devon, Dorset and Somerset, just 20 minutes from the Jurassic Coast, The Tytherleigh Arms is a cracking find. Its cosy and laid-back atmosphere is the perfect setting in which to enjoy the creative dishes pouring from the kitchen.

The culinary team is headed up by chef Nick Topham, who draws out bold yet balanced flavours from seasonal, local produce. Pair this with his eye for detail and discover dishes that are as Instagrammable as they are delicious.

A standout starter pairs cured rainbow trout with tomato jelly, preserved lemon puree, crispy capers and dill mayo. For a sweet finale, lemon verbena set custard, served with poached cherries, almond streusel and refreshing cherry granita, is a great choice among a line-up of tempting puds.

Choose your dining experience: long and lazy Sunday lunch, date-night dinner from the à la carte menu or tasting menu, or overnight stay complete with breakfast. Whichever you opt for, every detail comes with a guarantee of quality, comfort and care.

Trencherman’s tip

Opt for the lighter lunch option between Wednesday and Saturday. Smaller dishes, such as tomato arancini or cod goujons with curry sauce, are best paired with a cold drink and shared among friends.
