Reached via winding lanes along the south Devon coast, Gara Rock occupies one of the region’s most dramatic positions. It’s perched high above the sea between Salcombe and East Portlemouth and pairs spectacular views with relaxed dining that makes the most of Devon and Cornwall’s outstanding produce.
Floor-to-ceiling windows place the coastline centre stage at Restaurant at Gara, where head chef James Huyton creates seasonal menus shaped by the land and sea. The summer Ox Grill menu features dishes such as whole sea bream with chermoula and pickled lemon, alongside tiger prawns with rose harissa, miso butter and lime. The chef’s background as a pastry chef shines through in desserts such as dark chocolate crémeux and the signature peanut butter ice cream encased in chocolate.
Sister restaurant Kitchen at Gara serves relaxed favourites, including St Ewe scotch egg with piccalilli and hand-stretched sourdough pizzas.
Sustainability runs through the operation, with ingredients repurposed wherever possible and surplus produce finding new life in house infusions and drinks.
