Bearslake Inn

Lake, Okehampton, Devon, EX20 4HQ

Stay the night

The ancient 13th-century Bearslake Inn, with its thatched roof and granite stone walls, is a perfect fit in a landscape of dramatic moorland.

The abundance of character continues inside the Bearslake Inn, where cob walls, low beams and narrow passages lead to a labyrinth of rooms where guests can find a cosy place to dine. They’re evidence of the pub’s former life as three separate cottages, and guests feel appropriately at home when treated to the finest Dartmoor hospitality from owner Lisa Jenkins and team.

In the kitchen, seasoned head chef Dolton Lodge (formerly of The Galley in Topsham and The Lamb at Longdown) upholds his reputation for precise and flavoursome cooking. His ethos revolves around quality seasonal ingredients, which are craft ed into gastropub classics.

Dolton’s culinary skills are showcased in dishes such as cider-braised pork belly with roast Cornish cauliflower, confit potato and Granny- Smith-and-cider jus.

No two visits are the same, as the menu changes weekly to reflect the freshest flavours from the markets. What does remain constant, however, are the Sunday roasts which have achieved legendary status locally.

Beyond the rooms, guests can also dine alfresco (when the weather permits) next to a babbling brook that winds through the two acres of garden.

Trencherman’s tip

Make it a gourmet getaway with an overnight stay in one of six ensuite rooms (four of which are dog-friendly), complete with a luxury Devon breakfast hamper delivered to the door.
