The Woolpack Inn

Slad Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL6 7QA

With a history dating back 300 years, views stretching across the Gloucestershire and the heart of England, and a critically acclaimed chef in the modern kitchen, it’s no surprise this homely inn has become a fashionable favourite.

Yet beneath its popularity, The Woolpack Slad remains as resolutely rustic and true to its local heritage as owner and celebrated British artist Daniel Chadwick hoped when he bought it in 1999.

While retaining many comforting touches of a pub from a bygone era, over the years it has been subtly and stylishly spruced up (the small wisteria-covered terrace is a delight in fair weather). Writer Laurie Lee, author of Cider With Rosie, was a patron of the pub right up to his death and would almost certainly have approved of the updates.

Head chef Adam Glover’s food is perfectly paired with this setting. His seasonal menu changes daily, with dishes taking inspiration from Mediterranean cooking and British classics given a subtle twist. Hearty fare like beef and Guinness pie with winter greens, and pork chop with cannellini beans, sit beside lighter options of ChalkStream trout en papillote, and whole plaice with braised fennel.

Trencherman’s tip

The Woolpack Slad is home to perhaps the world’s smallest bookshop – the perfect opportunity for some extra analogue entertainment to accompany lunch and a pint.
