Delicious simplicity at The Old Coastguard

Part of Charles and Edmund Inkin’s Eatdrinksleep stable (sister venues include chef fave The Gurnard’s Head near Zennor and The Felin Fach Griffin in Brecon), The Old Coastguard is a restaurant with rooms in the beautiful fishing village of Mousehole.

Its menu is dictated by what’s local and in season. Newlyn’s dayboats tie up a mere two miles west so fish is a given, but head chef Danny Garland also pays homage to the superb meats, cheeses and vegetables on the restaurant’s doorstep.

There are three charming places to dine: at scrubbed wooden tables on the Upper Deck with views to St Clement’s Isle, on the Sun Deck with just a pane of glass separating diners from the palm trees or, best of all, on the terrace looking down at the sun-dappled sea.

The menu may be rooted in traditional brasserie-style cooking, but when ingredients this good are treated with care the dishes are elevated above the norm. Cornish cod, for example, is served with jerusalem artichokes, rainbow chard, cockles, trout roe and cider.

With many of the cosy rooms featuring views across Mount’s Bay or out to sea, staying the night is seriously tempting.

Trencherman’s tip: During warmer months, make a beeline for The Crabshack outdoor bar and kitchen. Enjoy seafood specials with a pint of craft beer or locally roasted speciality coffee from Yallah.
