Stay the night

Part of Charles and Edmund Inkin’s EATDRINKSLEEP stable (sister venues include chef fave The Gurnard’s Head near Zennor and The Felin Fach Griffin in Wales), this restaurant with rooms resides in the beautiful fishing village of Mousehole.

Its menu is dictated by what’s local and in season. Newlyn’s dayboats tie up a mere two miles west, so fish is a given, but head chef Danny Garland also pays homage to the superb meats, cheeses and veg produced nearby. His culinary background (he previously cooked with Yotam Ottolenghi) also inspires creative plant-based and vegetarian compilations.

Choose from three charming places to wine and dine: the scrubbed wooden tables of the Upper Deck with their views to St Clement’s Isle; the comfy sofas on the Sun Deck overlooking the palm-lined garden; or, best of all, on the terrace with its ocean panorama.

The menu may be rooted in traditional brasserie-style cooking, but when ingredients this good are treated with care dishes are elevated above the norm. Stuffed courgette flower, for example, comprises lobster, lime leaf and roasted-chilli jam, while brown crab is paired with handmade stracci pasta, heritage tomatoes and samphire.

Many of the cosy bedrooms feature views across Mount’s Bay and out to sea, so staying the night is seriously tempting.

Trencherman’s tip

During the summer, make a beeline for The Crab Shack in the garden. Here, seafood and lighter snacks are served all day alongside drinks such as craft beer and locally roasted speciality coffee from Yallah.
