Behind a stone-walled alley just off Wareham’s bustling high street, The Priory feels wonderfully removed from the outside world.
Set within four acres of gardens on the banks of the River Frome, the Grade II*-listed property may have more than a thousand years of history, but it also enjoys all the comforts of a boutique hotel.
Evidence of a dwelling on the site dates back to 809, and over the centuries it has served as a nunnery, monastery and private home. Today, guests can explore hidden archways, ancient stonework and beautifully preserved interiors before retreating to individually furnished bedrooms in the main house or the renovated 16th-century Boat House.
The Garden Room restaurant provides a striking contrast with its glass walls and green oak beams, which frame views across the lawns and riverbank. Here, head chef Stephan Guinebault utilises carefully sourced ingredients in classic dishes and generous sharing plates. Highlights include the Priory Surf & Turf with two Jurassic Farm 6oz Angus fillet steaks, two half garlic Kimmeridge Bay lobsters, vine tomatoes, local watercress and peppercorn sauce.
The Priory’s mixture of character, hospitality and dining has earned it widespread recognition, including Hotel of the Year at the Food Lifestyle Awards 2025.
