Innovative ideas and intricate plating

MasterChef: The Professionals finalist Elly Wentworth continues to fly the flag for female chefs from her celebrated Dartmouth restaurant. Joyce Molyneux, the first woman to receive a Michelin star, ran The Angel for 25 years and this spectacular setting is enjoying an exciting era under Elly’s tenure.

The restaurant is a great example of relaxed-yet-refined dining. The team take as much care over guests’ comfort as they do in the sourcing, cooking and presentation of delicacies such as roast diver scallops and Devon Red venison.

From the likes of dayboat turbot with broad beans, tarragon and truffle butter to Creedy Carver duck with pickled walnuts, salt-baked kohlrabi and duck jus, every minute detail is fashioned with artistry and an eye for presentation.

The puddings are equally intricate and include delights such as an indulgent “chocolate bar” with layers of lime caramel and pistachio.

Seats by the large picture windows offer views over the harbour, so arrive early and explore the impressive drinks menu (which includes a superb wine list and notable local additions) while watching boats bobbing on the River Dart.

Trencherman’s tip: Wine lover? Browse the list online before you visit. Particularly unusual bottles need to be ordered 48 hours in advance.
