A hidden treasure in the city of Truro, The Alverton (sister to The Greenbank and The Falmouth hotels) is tucked away at the top of a winding drive and surrounded by mature gardens. It feels a world away from the bustle of the city, despite being just a ten-minute stroll from its centre.
The Grade II*-listed hotel’s riches are revealed at every turn: on discovering its history as a private residence and convent; when unwinding on the sunny terrace, cocktail in hand; and on snoozing in one of the luxurious bedrooms or suites.
The true jewel, however, is the two-AA-rosette cooking from a skilled team led by head chef Ollie Wyatt and executive chef Nick Hodges. The à la carte menu is flush with Cornish fare from land and sea, including Ollie’s pick of the local dayboat catch.
Dishes such as Kilhallon Farm beef fillet with roasted cauliflower purée, Davidstow rarebit, leek, gherkin and red wine jus rub shoulders with fresh-egg tagliatelle with mussels, clams, samphire and chilli, and ravioli of caramelised pear and goat’s cheese with spinach and sage butter.
Foraged accompaniments elevate seasonal flavours to centre stage in the likes of chocolate tart with seasonal berries.
