Stay the night

Falmouth may have been home to many hotels of note, but none have stood the test of time like The Greenbank. Dating to 1640, the building overlooking the Fal Estuary has hosted many illustrious guests including The Wind in the Willows author Kenneth Grahame.

While the hotel is steeped in history, the atmosphere is casual and contemporary. At the Water’s Edge restaurant, creative dishes showcasing the finest Cornish ingredients are concocted by head chef Bobby Southworth and executive chef Nick Hodges. Expect gems such as pan-seared scallops with pork belly, black pudding, preserved peach and endive. Balmy day? The terrace is a glorious alfresco dining spot.

After dinner, settle at the adjoining Water’s Edge bar to watch the boats on the harbour (the hotel has its own private pontoon) while indulging in a creative cocktail. For an alternative dining destination, head below deck to The Working Boat pub to sink a local craft beer and enjoy hearty pub fare.

The restaurant hosts superb foodie events such as Bobby’s Taste of Cornwall and a Friday cocktail club.

Make it a full gourmet getaway by booking one of the contemporary bedrooms. They’re an excellent base from which to explore the nearby National Maritime Museum Cornwall, Pendennis Castle and the South West Coast Path.
