Prawn on the Lawn in Padstow may be one of Cornwall’s most notable seafood restaurants, but it actually started out in 2013 as a tiny fishmonger and seafood bar in Islington. The original venue was such a hit that founders Rick and Katie Toogood decided to open a second site at the source of their impeccable produce.
The menus at Prawn on the Lawn in Padstow are updated daily and dictated by what the Cornish fishermen land each morning, so no two visits to this bijou seafood bar are ever quite the same.
Working closely with chef Izzy Joscelyne, Rick favours sustainable fish and shellfish species. They supplement the day’s catch with hyper-fresh veg from the restaurant’s own raised beds and from Ross Geach of Padstow Kitchen Garden.
Delicious dishes – think hake with cauliflower, parmesan, truffle oil and porcini; monkfish in North African marinade with herb salad; and lemon sole with ‘nduja and tarragon – are complemented by local wines from nearby Trevibban Mill and beers from Padstow Brewing Co. and Bluntrock.
Trencherman’s tip
POTL’s popularity has seen the empire expand. Fish fiends can also visit seafood bar Little Prawn across the street (menu highlights include oysters, crudos, fresh lobster and ceviche), and Barnaby’s restaurant at nearby Trevibban Mill vineyard.
