Lockdown takeout: The Salutation Inn, Topsham

Fancy a ready-to-eat takeout of fabulously fresh fish? Or want to try a finish-at-home meal kit? The Salutation Inn in Topsham has both gourmet experiences covered.

The lowdown

During last year’s second lockdown, chef director Tom Williams-Hawkes of The Salutation Inn in Topsham and his wife Amelia opened Salt, a wet fish deli. The shop was the result of the couple’s commitment to supporting local fisherman and their desire to encourage people to buy local produce and shop sustainably. Then, in further entrepreneurial endeavour (and because their smart Topsham restaurant with rooms was still under mandatory closure), the duo introduced a weekly-changing takeout called Luke’s Larder, and the Salutation Saturday at Home Kit – a three-course finish-at-home enterprise.

When

The Luke’s Larder takeout is available to collect every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5-7pm. Pre-ordering and a designated collection time is essential. The Salutation Saturday at Home Kit must be pre-ordered by 5pm on Friday for collection next-day between 12pm and 5pm.

Why The Salutation Inn?

Tom’s cooking fuses British classics with modern French influences and revolves around locally sourced and seasonal produce. It’s crafted into elegant dishes which look as divine as they taste. While you’ll have to wait until mid-spring to indulge in feasting on this carefully crafted fare in the attractive restaurant, the current lockdown provides a great opportunity to delight in a gourmet Salutation offering at home.

Foodie creds

Tom was a grand finalist in the Best Trencherman’s Chef category of the 2020 Trencherman’s Awards. The Salutation Inn has also featured in The Good Food Guide and is Michelin-recommended.

The thought of splashing £200 plus on dinner for two might make you wince, but every penny is well accounted for in the uber luxe Lucknam Park experience.
