A taste of Italy in Fowey
‘Non si vive di solo pane’, translating as ‘you don’t live on bread alone’, is an apt motto for Appleton’s Bar and Restaurant in Fowey, which excels at Italian-inspired cuisine made from artisan Cornish produce.
From the moment guests are ushered through the door at Appleton’s to the point where they put down their dessert spoons, they’re made to feel like part of the family in this relaxed yet expertly run restaurant. Overseeing front of house is Lyndsey Appleton, one half of the husband-and-wife team who own and run the restaurant. Andy Appleton heads up the kitchen, knocking out first-rate plates that draw on his passion for classic Italian cooking with a modern edge.
Expect to find the finest Cornish seafood paired with heavenly homemade pasta in dishes such as squid-ink linguine with Cornish crab, chilli and fennel seed pangrattato, and mafaldine and Cornish lobster ragu with lemon gremolata. Meanwhile, desserts such as chocolate pannacotta and an Italian-leaning drinks list (with wines from most regions of the country) allow a surrendering of the senses to the full continental dining experience.
Before leaving, grab a bag of Andy’s handcrafted pasta from the in-house deli to take home.
Trencherman’s tip: Struggling to get a reservation? The countertop seating overlooking the bar isn’t bookable, so walk-ins might just get lucky.
