Magical dining in remote north Cornwall

Whether you’re an ale enthusiast or not, the arrival of the Bar & Bistro at Tintagel Brewery should put this local attraction firmly on your radar. At just 24 years old, fine-dining newcomers Simon Hobbs (front of house) and George Buckley (head chef) are already gaining a reputation in the industry, using ingredients from the surrounding farms alongside beers brewed onsite to create modern European dishes with plucky creativity.

This stylish space has a relaxed atmosphere, and from the outdoor terrace you can take in inspiring views across Bodmin Moor and out towards the Cornish cliffs while sipping on one of Simon’s signature cocktails and enjoying tapas-style sharing plates. Alternatively, take a seat inside for a five-course seasonal tasting menu or dine à la carte on Wagyu steak (reared next door) and Caliburn ale pie.

The brewery’s beers pepper the menus via dark-ale breads and silky stout ice cream, and the entire menu is crafted from Cornish ingredients such as Port Isaac fish and locally reared poultry. Highlights include ChalkStream rainbow trout cured in Cornish sea salt, sugar, citrus and Seahorse Gin (distilled at Tregida Farm a few miles away) – a delicately flavoured forkful, cut with the pleasing acidity of kumquat. Then there’s the signature ‘chocolate and stout’ dessert, which combines chocolate delice and a brown butter and stout crumb, with blackberry gel and the brewery’s own ice cream revealing notes of roasted malt and dark fruits.
