The South West’s leading dining guide celebrates its latest edition with a gathering of the region’s chefs and restaurateurs at Michelin-starred Àclèaf in Devon
The South West’s dining community gathered at Àclèaf at Boringdon Hall Hotel in Devon on Monday October 12 to celebrate the launch of the Trencherman’s Guide Edition 34.
The latest edition of the guide, which has been championing exceptional dining across the South West since 1992, welcomes 27 new members. From neighbourhood restaurants and characterful country pubs to ambitious destination dining rooms, the additions reflect the breadth and variety of the region’s dining scene.
A celebration of South West dining
The launch brought together chefs, restaurateurs and members of the hospitality community for a special four-course lunch at Michelin-starred Àclèaf, near Plymouth.
The menu was a collaboration between three acclaimed chefs: Scott Paton of Àclèaf, Pete Murt of The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow and Hywel Jones of Lucknam Park near Bath.
Scott opened the lunch with quail, onion and bay, before Pete served steamed Cornish hake with casserole sauce, glazed baby onion and girolle mushrooms. Hywel’s main course showcased Hampshire venison with cep, chervil root and preserved elderberries, while Scott returned for dessert with Nicolas Berger chocolate and pistachio.

The menu drew on produce from Four Seasons Fruiterers, St Ewe, Walter Rose & Son and Wing of St Mawes, with coffee supplied by Owens. Drinks partners Hallgarten & Novum Wines, Sharp’s Brewery, Navas and Trevethan Gin helped make the occasion possible.
The annual gathering provided an opportunity to celebrate the people, produce and hospitality that continue to shape the South West’s dining scene.
A new chapter for the guide
Edition 34 marks a new chapter for the Trencherman’s Guide, combining its trusted restaurant recommendations with an expanded collection of editorial features exploring the people, places and ideas shaping South West dining.

Alongside well over 100 recommended restaurants, readers can discover why leading chefs are choosing to build their careers in the region, how fire-led cooking is influencing menus, the growing confidence of English wine producers and the relationship between the region’s coastline and its kitchens.
Chaired by Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines MBE, the Trencherman’s committee continues to uphold the guide’s long-established standards of quality.
Michael said: “This year’s new members capture the confidence and variety of the South West dining scene.”
Guide editor Abi Manning added: “What’s particularly exciting is the breadth of the list. There isn’t one blueprint for a great South West restaurant. Exceptional cooking is happening in brilliant pubs, independent restaurants and hotels, in our cities and in tiny villages – these are places people will make a journey specifically to experience.
“Being selected for the Trencherman’s Guide has always meant joining a collection of restaurants we genuinely believe are worth seeking out. It’s a privilege to welcome these 27 new members to that community.”
